Earth History Illustrated: the Genesis Story

Today we are bombarded at every turn with evolutionary ideas about our planet.  In newspapers, magazines, novels, TV shows, movies, university textbooks…we hear secular theories both directly and subtly.  One is the Big Bang, the theory of how our universe came into being.  Other theories are woven into the fabric of our lives so that we begin to believe them without question.  Some theories are the uniformitarianism idea of how the earth’s physical features (canyons, deltas, etc.) slowly changed over eons of time, the length of time it takes for fossils, stalactites, coal, diamonds, and oil to form, the age of the earth, the primordial soup idea of how life began, and the Darwinian ideas of how it evolved.  These theories are quite regularly disguised as truth.  When talking about these things, the word theory has almost completely been dropped from our vocabulary so most people regard it as “scientific” truth.  Many Christians have used scientific theories to explain the Bible instead of using the Bible to explain and understand the science and world around them.  In doing so, the authority of the Bible has been abraded.

In God’s Word, we learn truth about our beginnings.  Read the book of Genesis.  God created the universe.  Reptiles did not change into birds nor monkeys into men; all of creation was started and completed during the first six days of earth’s history.  Creation scientists heartily disagree with evolutionary scientists about many theories.  There are many things we know because God reveals them to us in His Word: salvation, justification, sanctification as well as creation.  The Bible is not specific about all the details of creation.  Christian scientist theorize, as do secular scientists, but they also prayerfully consider God’s Word in the formation of their theories.

The Bible does say, “in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lust, and saying, Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.  For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was being overflowed with water, perished…” 2 Peter 3: 3-6

Many of the earth’s features were formed quickly and cataclysmically during the time of Noah’s Flood and not uniformly as the majority of secular scientists speculate (with “everything going on as it has since the beginning”).  Fossils, coal, and oil have been known to form in short periods of time not the millions of years we’ve been taught it always takes.  About ten years ago after the eruption of Mount Saint Helen, a canyon was formed in less than two weeks exactly like the Grand Canyon—which evolutionists theorize took millions of years.  Creation scientists have other theories about changes after the Flood based on Scripture: our deep oceans and high mountains, the Ice Age, climate changes, extinction of plants and animals (including the dinosaurs), and continental drift.  If you haven’t explored these theories before, do so now as you read Genesis and ask the Holy Spirit to guide and teach you.

This journal will help you begin your exploration.  It is divided into three parts: God’s perfect, created world, the world after Adam’s sin, and the world after Noah’s flood.  As your child illustrates the Genesis story, be available to discuss and help research questions.  Ponder mysteries together.  When doing Part l, ask how is it that God created light on the first day but didn’t create the sun until the fourth day!?  Talk about the curses of the earth that God pronounced in the Garden as you child illustrates Part ll.  God told Adam that he would die if he ate the forbidden fruit, but what was the first physical death Adam encountered?  In Part lll consider the drastic changes the once perfect earth underwent during and after the Flood.  If the protective water vapor canopy was removed from the atmosphere after the first-ever rains, isn’t it possible that the new climatic changes might bring on an Ice Age?  How would life on earth change for Noah and his descendants?  Did people perhaps shelter in caves?  Our so-called “cave men” would have been sophisticated and civilized.  The Flood was not millions of years ago, nor is the earth millions of years old.

May Elohim, the Creator of heavens and earth, Who was in the beginning, bless you with wisdom and direction as you begin this wonderful study!
