O, God Thy Sea Is So Great And My Boat Is So Small

 Prayer of the Breton fisherman

Do you feel as if you are riding the high seas today where there is turbulence and danger, where storms rage in the fiercest intensity?  Is your weather beaten boat driven upon a perilous sea?  The waves of depression wash over the side of your small weather beaten vessel.  You bail in desperation but to no avail.  As the pain and frustrations rise, your boat sinks lower in the water.  Fatigue threatens to loosen the tentative hold you have on the side of your boat as you cling with the hope and prayer that this storm will soon be over.  But the sounds of the storm rage louder, children fighting, friends discouraging, pain increasing.  The darkness of the storm creeps in so that you can’t even see the hand in front of your face.

More waves break over the boat, you panic as you see your efforts to bail are to no avail.  Master where are you!  Master you said you would never leave or forsake me!  You look to the stern and there He lies sleeping.  Master, you say as you violently shake Him awake.  Master I am in jeopardy!  I am about to perish!   Don’t you care that I am sinking!

Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm.  And he said unto them, Where is your faith?  Luke 8: 24-25

Silence, calm…where is my faith?  Jesus calmed the storm, but could He have wanted something more for me?  Something BIGGER?  Could that something bigger be not the calm of my storm, but the calm in the storm?

Jesus never promised our lives would be without tribulation.  “In the world ye shall have tribulation…”John 16: 33, but He did say we would have peace, “These things have I spoken, that in me you might have peace…”John 16: 33.  Peace in Him.  And this man shall be the peace…Micah 5: 5

If you are in the middle of a tempest, if depression is washing over your very being, if discouragement threatens to wear down your hold, if pain racks and stresses your side, children and household needs over-whelm, fatigue is pulling you down under the water.  Don’t forget you are in the boat with Jesus!  No matter how fierce the storm, no matter how powerful the waves, no matter how violent the wind, Jesus is more!  He is bigger, stronger, and more powerful.  He is in your boat with you!  The one who spoke and it was is in the boat with you!  Can He who created water be pulled under by it?  Can He who created the wind be blown over?  Can He who holds the earth and all that is in His hand be moved?  His word promises us calm in the storm.  Stand firm on Jesus.  As the waves toss, the wind blows, and the storm rages on, stand firm in Jesus.

He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.  Luke 6: 48

We can’t avoid the storms, but we can stand firm through them with Jesus.

I pray today that no matter how big the storm, no matter how fierce the tempest is that rages in your life that you will find the shalom, the peace of Jesus and stand firm receiving that blessing of the calm in the midst of the storm, the peace that transcends all understanding.

Lovingly in Jesus,

Cindy
